# Skills

> Package reusable instructions once, then let agents apply them automatically or invoke them yourself.

A **Skill** is a reusable set of instructions — writing guidelines, a process to follow, brand rules — that an agent can apply automatically when it's relevant, or that you can invoke yourself in any chat. Think of it as a focused capability you teach once and reuse everywhere.

<Info>
  Skills is an optional organization feature. If you don't see **Skills** under **Customize** in your sidebar, ask your administrator.

## Creating a Skill

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Skills">
    In the sidebar, expand **Customize**, then select **Skills**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Start a new skill">
    Click **Create Skill**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Describe it">
    Give it a **Name** (lowercase letters, digits, and dashes only, e.g. `brand-guidelines`) and a **Description**. Be specific about when this skill should apply — the description is what an agent uses to decide whether it's relevant.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Write the instructions">
    In **Instructions**, write what the skill should do in markdown.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Uploading a Skill

If you already have a skill written elsewhere, you can import it instead of writing it from scratch:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the upload dialog">
    In **Skills**, choose **Upload a skill**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Provide the file">
    Upload a single **.md** file, or a **.zip** / **.skill** archive. A `.zip` or `.skill` file must include a `SKILL.md` file; a folder upload is packaged automatically and must also include one at its root (or in a single subfolder).
  </Step>
</Steps>

<Warning>
  Skill imports are limited in size (your administrator sets the exact limit, 50 MB by default). Oversized files are rejected before upload.
</Warning>

## Auto-Applied vs. Manually Invoked Skills

Each skill has an **Invocation Mode**:

<CardGroup cols={3}>
  <Card title="Auto" icon="wand-magic-sparkles">
    The skill is automatically applied by the agent when relevant to the conversation.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Manual" icon="hand-pointer">
    The skill is only used when you explicitly invoke it.
  </Card>

  <Card title="Both" icon="arrows-repeat">
    The skill can trigger automatically, or be invoked manually.
  </Card>
</CardGroup>

To invoke a skill manually, type **`$`** in the message box to open the skill picker, then select the skill you want to use for that message.

<Tip>
  You can turn any skill on or off for yourself without editing it — use the toggle next to a skill in the list to control whether it's active.
</Tip>

## Sharing Skills

Skills can be shared the same way agents and prompts are:

* **Viewer** — can view and use the skill, but not edit it
* **Editor** — can view and edit the skill
* **Owner** — full control, including sharing and deletion

Share a skill with specific people, a group, or (if your administrator allows it) everyone in your organization.

<Note>
  Your administrator can restrict who is allowed to create or share skills at the organization level.
